Central Oregon Sunrise

It's a little too dark. There's a loss of detail in the scrub brush on the sides. It looks different, darker, either this small or via the web. I need to redo it.

From a recent road trip through Central Oregon. I went to the Painted Hills the previous day, then camped along the John Day river the previous night. I woke up early then started driving west. I saw the sun starting to come up in my rear view mirror so I pulled over and waited to take this picture.

What I'm really liking about digital photography right now is the ability to develop an image two or more times so that each part has the best exposure, contrast, white balance, etc, then being able to paint the separate parts back together to get the picture you want, and actually saw. This picture has been "photoshopped," but it's very true to the moment it was taken.

Current Goals

Sun Sep 20, 2009, 7:16 PM
Right now I'm just working on straight forward photographs, nothing fancy or overly creative. I'm just trying to capture (and recognize) what's in front of me. I'm getting acquainted with a nice digital camera, Photoshop, and Lightroom -- I really like Lightroom. I used to do a lot of photography a long time ago and had a real bohemian streak going. Those days appear to be gone. My goals are a lot simpler now, and a lot less about putting as much of myself into each photo as possible.

Usually I take my camera when I go camping or exploring, but I don't usually think to take it with me otherwise. I need to break that habit. I also need to start finding and exploring places specifically to photograph. I'll get there.

I've poked around DA for years. I'm glad I finally set up an account and started uploading. Mostly I'm glad I started really exploring some of the other photography on here. There's some incredible work to be found. There is also a great community of folks working on the same goals, folks who aren't "great photographers," but are great folks doing very good, very interesting work. I'm finding it very inspiring.

You too. :)

I really liked the light coming through the leaves. It didn't overwhelm them. It was perfect.
